Cold Cathode Applications:

Cold cathode may be used for direct and indirect lighting, as well as for decorative applications. Its flexibility lets you achieve many effects:

  1. General reflected light and ambient lighting for corporate facilities, retail malls, hotel, lobbies, and hallways.
  2. Indirect / in cove lighting for hallways, ceiling details and stairwells.
  3. Decorative exterior lighting that outlines facades and details architectural elements.
  4. Illuminating retail displays and commercial signage.
  5. Color fading and backlighting for dramatic effects in lounges, nightclubs, restaurants and in retail spaces.

Cold cathode lamps can be operated either from cold cathode ballasts or high-voltage transformers, depending on the luminosity and application desired as well as the maintenance requirements.

Lamps:

The cold cathode manufacturing process consists of evacuating all ambient gases and impurities out of the tube and filling it with an inert gas and droplet of mercury. The most satisfactory gas used on high-voltage installations is argon, given its brilliant light output.

Cold cathode lamps are instant-start, using offset cylindrical electrodes. The cold cathode electrode has a very long life and, unlike the fluorescent electrode, is not affected by the number of starts. Thus, the useful life of cold cathode lamps is generally terminated by the eventual solarization of the tube rather than by electrode failure. The combination of long electrode life and durable glass tubing makes cold cathode the most economical type for low maintenance installation in the majority of hallway and ceiling-cove applications.

The luminous efficacy of cold cathode is nearly double that of incandescent lamps (above 15% vs 8%). Its higher efficiency is cost effective in two ways: lamps require less electricity and air conditioned spaces require less cooling due to lower heat output.

Lampholders:

Available lampholders include single contact for feed and/or return, and double contact for continuous run. The material is glazed porcelain with phos-copper contacts. The lampholders can operate at a maximum voltage of 7500.

Transformers:

ACC Lighting Systems uses transformers with a high current rating to assure adequate light output. These transformers are designed to support the high ambient temperature to which they may be subject .
